What’s the difference between a BB cream, a (tinted) moisturizer and a foundation? Or a luminizer and a highlighter? And what about an eyeshadow primer and an eyeshadow base? And is there really a difference between clear nail polish and a top coat (or is it just an excuse to let us pay that dollar more)?
It’s easy to get lost in the beauty world – each year they’re coming with these new things and sometimes we’re like “but how’s that different from ___?”. I thought it would be fun to make a little post about things that have confused me in the past.
BB creams vs. foundations vs. tinted moisturizers
A BB cream, full name Blemish Balm Cream, is a primer, moisturizer, serum, foundation and sun block all in one! Other benefits are anti-aging, acne treatment, high sun protection factor, sebum control and so on – it kind of depends on the brand. Each BB cream has it own benefits list! The shades they come in are very limited – four different shades max, if you’re lucky. It doesn’t provide as much coverage as a foundation does. If you want a really good BB cream, try Asian ones such as Skin79 (one of the best-selling brands out there). The Western ones aren’t as well-developed and quite different from “the real deal”.
A foundation evens and conceals our skin and all its impurities. Most foundations, unlike BB creams, don’t heal or protect your skin and aren’t as light as a tinted moisturizer. Normally, a foundation feels the heaviest of the three. It comes in many shades and because it’s so concealing it’s important you get the right one.
A tinted moisturizer focuses on light coverage while moisturizing the skin. It’s lightweight and very easy to apply. It has a bigger range of shades than BB creams. Sometimes it contains some sun protection.
Luminizers vs. highlighters
The difference between a luminizers and a highlighter is simple. Highlighters have more shine to them and are best to highlight certain areas of the face like your cheek bones and brow bones. A luminizer is the “soft” version of a highlighter. They have less shimmer so they don’t reflect as much as a highlighter. They’re used to brighten up the skin.
Eye primers vs. eye bases
So, what’s the difference between an eye primer and an eye base? A primer makes your eyeshadow smooth and perfect so it doesn’t look crusty. If you have a good eye primer, your eye shadow shouldn’t crease and it should help you to blend out your eyeshadow easier. A base, however, is usually a plain cream color that helps you to intensify the color of your eye shadow. It helps the color to pop out!
Top coats vs. clear nail polishes
Yes, there is a difference between using a top coat or a clear nail polish as your topcoat! They’re created for totally different uses. A top coat prevents the nail polish against chipping, scratches and peeling while a clear nail polish is just your regular nail polish. It isn’t as effective as a real top coat just because it wasn’t meant to be used as a top coat.
I hope this was useful for someone! What things have confused you before?
